A sunrise view over Laos from Doi Pha Tang in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand. The area is home to settlement of former Chinese Kumintan army and their descendants as well as tribal peoples such as Yao and Hmong. In the good weather days one can even see the Mekong river gently flowing in the valley in Lao side far away.

Practicing boat racing on Nan river in Ban, Thailand
Practing for boat racing on Nan river in Nan, northern Thailand. These boat rowing competitions are held in many riverside towns in south east Asia. They usually take place once a year but in different times in different places. On the days leading to the big day, long tailed boats could be seen carried on trailers pulled by trucks or tractors along with the crew of rowers or paddlers from the villages.

A farm hut
The farm hut where we took a shelter in a September rain. We ate dinner by the side of this fire place. Sangklaburi, western Thailand (September 2006 trip).

Ban Laiwo
Ban Laiwo primary school. Laiwo is a Karen village in Sangklaburi. In the dry season the dirt road can be used for transport.

Lay Tong Ku village, Umphang
A house in Lay Tong Ku village in Umphang, close to Myanmar border. This Karen village is a bit different from other Karens. They have their rules of living that belong to a group of Karen peoples whose villages are scattered in Myanmar's Karen state and few in Thailand.

This over 70 year old man was making posts for the new corn storage. Originally from Myanmar's Karen state, he and his family moved to Lay Tong Ku village in Thai side about 3 decades ago.
